Founded by Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne in 1991, AMAR aims to build and improve upon the lives of some of the world’s most disadvantaged people.
For more than 20 years, we have provided professional healthcare and education on a sustainable basis, and today we deliver more than one million medical consultations to disadvantaged people each year.
AMAR supplements primary and secondary schools with programmes in health education, Human Rights and Rule of Law, and democracy. We also offer adult development programmes which provide leadership training, adult literacy and vocational courses in IT, English language and business skills.
In 2012, we delivered regular education and training to approximately 35,000 Iraqis in their communities, including children, students, prisoners, prison guards, widows and female heads of households.
Our clinics and education programmes form an anchor for communities which have few other resources. The assurance that comes from having dependable healthcare and good schools for children and adult learners creates a more optimistic and less conflict-prone atmosphere at the heart of its community.
